More bird's eye views . . . and the Harvey Milk Terminal 1 at SFO

After visiting family in Kansas City recently, the return flight to San Francisco included a brief stopover in Phoenix Arizona.

These are some of the photos from the flight home.

Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.

Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty.

John Ruskin

Tonto National Forest, Apache Junction, Arizona

One doesn't stop seeing. One doesn't stop framing. It doesn't turn off and turn on. It's on all the time.

Annie Leibovitz

Some people are still unaware that reality contains unparalleled beauties. The fantastic and unexpected, the ever-changing and renewing is nowhere so exemplified as in real life itself.

Berenice Abbott

Tonto National Forest, Payson Arizona

The ground we walk on, the plants and creatures, the clouds above constantly dissolving into new formations - each gift of nature possessing its own radiant energy, bound together by cosmic harmony.

Ruth Bernhard

It is in the wild places, where the edge of the earth meets the corners of the sky, the human spirit is fed.

Art Wolfe

Nature is so powerful, so strong. It takes you to a place within yourself.

Annie Leibovitz

In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.

Aristotle

Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.

Frank Lloyd Wright

If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive.

Eleanora Duse

What the human eye observes casually and incuriously, the eye of the camera (the lens) notes with relentless fidelity.

Berenice Abbott

Rio Verde, Arizona

If a given combination of trees, mountains, water, and houses, say a landscape, is beautiful, it is not so by itself, but because of me, of my favor, of the idea or feeling I attach to it.

Charles Baudelaire

McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Scottsdale, Arizona

Everyone has a point of view. Some people call it style, but what we're really talking about is the guts of a photograph. When you trust your point of view, that's when you start taking pictures.

Annie Leibovitz

Paradise Valley, Arizona

Don’t look for new landscapes, use new eyes to see what is already there.

Gerald Causse

Piestewa Peak/Dreamy Draw, Phoenix Arizona, Southwest Extreme Triangle

Photography's like this baby that needs to be fed all the time. It's always hungry.

Annie Leibovitz

Phoenix Arizona, Southwest Extreme Triangle

The more you do, the more you realize there is to do, what a vast object the metropolis is, and how the work of photographing could go on forever.

Berenice Abbott

Photography is not only drawing with light, though light is the indispensable agent of its being. It is modeling or sculpturing with light, to reproduce the plastic form of natural objects. It is painting with light.

Berenice Abbott

Phoenix, Arizona

The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.

Dorothea Lange

Tolleson, Southwest Extreme Triangle

Any landscape is a condition of the spirit.

Henri Frederic Amiel

If you are not willing to see more than is visible, you won't see anything.

Ruth Bernhard

Goodyear, Arizona - Southwest Extreme Triangle

I believe the world is incomprehensibly beautiful - an endless prospect of magic and wonder.

Ansel Adams

You know there are moments such as these when time stands still and all you do is hold your breath and hope it will wait for you.

Dorothea Lange

Buckeye, Arizona

The landscape affects the human psyche - the soul, the body and the innermost contemplations - like music. Every time you feel nature deeper you resonate better with her, finding new elements of balance and freedom.

Nikos Kazantzakis

Photography is a very subtle thing. You must let the camera take you by the hand, as it were, and lead you into your subject.

Margaret Bourke-White

Tonopah, Arizona

Light is my inspiration, my paint and brush. It is as vital as the model herself. Profoundly significant, it caresses the essential superlative curves and lines. Light I acknowledge as the energy upon which all life on this planet depends.

Ruth Bernhard

This is the gift of the landscape photograph, that the heart finds a place to stand.

Emmet Gowin

Nature is so powerful, so strong. Capturing its essence is not easy - your work becomes a dance with light and the weather. It takes you to a place within yourself.

Annie Leibovitz

I never question what to do, it tells me what to do. The photographs make themselves with my help.

Ruth Bernhard

Each time I make a photograph I celebrate the life I love and the beauty I know and the happiness I have experienced. All my photographs are made like that responding to my intuition... After all these years, I am still motivated by the radiance that light creates when it transforms an object into something magical. What the eye sees is an illusion of what is real. The black-and-white image is yet another transformation. What exactly exists, we may never know.

Ruth Bernhard

Seeing is more than a physiological phenomenon... We see not only with our eyes but with all that we are and all that our culture is. The artist is a professional see-er.

Dorothea Lange

Landscapes of great wonder and beauty lie under our feet and all around us. They are discovered in tunnels in the ground, the heart of flowers, the hollows of trees, fresh-water ponds, seaweed jungles between tides, and even drops of water. Life in these hidden worlds is more startling in reality than anything we can imagine. How could this earth of ours, which is only a speck in the heavens, have so much variety of life, so many curious and exciting creatures?

Walt Disney

The formula for doing a good job in photography is to think like a poet.

Imogen Cunningham

#1 Never Get Used to Anything.

Ruth Bernhard

To me, beauty appears when one feels deeply, and art is an act of total attention.

Dorothea Lange

Things happen in front of you. That's perhaps the most wonderful and mysterious aspect of photography.

Annie Leibovitz

One should really use the camera as though tomorrow you'd be stricken blind.

Dorothea Lange

A burning purpose attracts others who are drawn along with it and help fulfill it.

Margaret Bourke-White

The very secret of life for me, I believed, was to maintain in the midst of rushing events an inner tranquility.
