Living on the streets in San Francisco

I have been photo-documenting the homeless, and San Francisco's street life, for nearly forty years. The photos in this collection were taken in the past five months. Nearly all of these photos were taken through the windshield, while I was stopped at an intersection and waiting for the red light to change.

The number of people living on the streets of San Francisco since the pandemic began in March 2020 has grown exponentially. The opportunity for photographing the homeless plight, has become much too frequent.

Not everyone who’s homeless is a drug-addict or in need of mental health care. Some are normal people who’ve been knocked down, and it can happen to you too. Not all of us made bad life choices.

Sherrilyn Kenyon

These things become the norm: that some homeless people die of cold on the streets is not news. In contrast, a ten-point drop in the stock markets of some cities is a tragedy.

Pope Francis

Poverty is the mother of crime.

Marcus Aurelius

Seven out of ten Americans are one paycheck away from being homeless.

Pras Michel

Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor.

Sholom Aleichem

People will sooner aid a sick dog lying on the sidewalk than to try to find shelter for a sick person. It’s too much to deal with.

Michael Zaslow

Homeless people bear God's image too.

Philip Yancey

Home, the spot of earth supremely blest,
A dearer, sweeter spot than all the rest.

Robert Montgomery

Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less. Marie Curie

Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.

John Howard Payne

The loneliest moment in someone’s life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly.

F. Scott Fitzgerald

Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.

Mother Teresa

I have an interest in giving people a cathartic experience, and making them look at homeless people differently, and making them question how they judge people, in general.

Paul Bettany

The truth is you don't know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride, and nothing is guaranteed. Eminem

Being homeless is like living in a post-apocalyptic world. You're on the outskirts of society.

Frank Dillane

Poverty is not dated. Homeless people have looked the same since the thirteenth century. Go back to the times of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. Look at photographs. It's amazing. The face on a homeless person is timeless.

Dustin Hoffman

Older homeless people are more likely to be women, because they don't have pensions and they are caretakers, so they withdraw from the workforce and end up having no pension if their husband leaves them, so the whole thing is just a nightmare.

Patricia Arquette

The Great Depression was going on, so that the station and the streets teemed with homeless people, just as they do today. The newspapers were full of stories of worker layoffs and farm foreclosures and bank failures, just as they are today. All that has changed, in my opinion, is that, thanks to television, we can hide a Great Depression. We may even be hiding a Third World War.

Kurt Vonnegut

Home is where the heart is.

Pliny the Elder

People feel that building a rocket for Mars is an exciting project, but if you see the refugees around the world and the millions of homeless people, then for me it's insulting that people are fantasizing about leaving planet Earth and going wherever.

Pedro Reyes

After all, a homeless man has reason to cry, everything in the world is pointed against him.

– Jack Kerouac

Most people, if you live in a big city, you see some form of schizophrenia every day, and it's always in the form of someone homeless. 'Look at that guy - he's crazy. He looks dangerous.' Well, he's on the streets because of mental illness. He probably had a job and a home.

Eric McCormack

Have you ever noticed that the only metaphor we have in our public discourse for solving problems is to declare war on it? We have the war on crime, the war on cancer, the war on drugs. But did you ever notice that we have no war on homelessness? You know why? Because there's no money in that problem. No money to be made off of the homeless. If you can find a solution to homelessness where the corporations and politicians can make a few million dollars each, you will see the streets of America begin to clear up pretty damn quick!

George Carlin

We have weapons of mass destruction we have to address here at home. Poverty is a weapon of mass destruction. Homelessness is a weapon of mass destruction. Unemployment is a weapon of mass destruction.

Dennis Kucinich

There is nothing more important than a good, safe, secure home.

Rosalynn Carter

Before you ignore another homeless person on the street, just remember that that could be someone’s father or someone’s mother and they have a story.

Syesha Mercado
