The Mark Hopkins Hotel stands on the site of the Mark Hopkins mansion that burned in the Great Fire of 1906. The retaining wall that surrounds the block which the Mark Hopkins Hotel and the Stanford Court Hotel stand on is all that is left of the Hopkins and Stanford mansions from 1906. The grey retaining wall is made of granite from the Sierra Mountains that was brought in by the engineers of the Central Pacific Railroad in the 19th century.
