Up Close and Personal with a Whale on Ocean Beach

On Monday morning, there was breaking news that a dead whale had washed up on Ocean Beach. Late in the afternoon, I went to see the whale and photograph it. On Tuesday, scientists performed a necropsy — an animal autopsy. This 41 ft female whale had several fractures to its skull and several broken vertebrae. The cause of death was blunt force trauma from being hit by a ship. This is the ninth whale to be found dead this year in Bay Area waters, and the fourth that has been hit by a ship.
