A road trip down south along Highway One

Carmel. . . Monterey. . . Big Sur. . . Hearst Castle

Dave and I spent the Labor Day Weekend at La Playa in Carmel. On Monday at dawn, we began driving south along Highway One through the Big Sur area. This stunningly beautiful ribbon of roadway hugs the dramatic California coastline for ninety miles, from Carmel, down to the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. The stretch of Highway One through Big Sur is a designated National Scenic Byway and California Scenic Highway, an honor reserved for highways that are so distinctive they are destinations unto themselves. Our journey down was filled with visions of brilliant morning sunlight shimmering on the otherworldly blues of endless Pacific Ocean, but then intermittently lost in the ghostly fingers of marine layer fog that were caressing the coves and cliffs and beaches of this continent’s jagged edge. We spent the afternoon at Hearst Castle. On the return trip back to Carmel, we drove in fog for three hours. At times along the way, we could see bold sunlight shining on the mountain ridges just above us.
