Nob Hill in 1924

The photo was taken from the lawn in front of the Fairmont Hotel. The Flood mansion (Pacific Union Club) is the dark building on the right. The parked cars in the foreground are on Mason Street. The street on the left is California Street. The Huntington Apartments building is the tall building in the center of the photograph. (It didn't become the Huntington Hotel until 1944.) The photo must have been taken in 1924 because the signs hanging above the Huntington’s main entrance are the construction company’s signs and that is the year the structure was built. I scanned this photo at 700dpi. When I magnify it, I can almost read the signs above the front door of the Huntington. I may be wrong, but the small sign on the right seems to read CAHILL BROS. The large sign directly above the entrance announces GRAND OPENING. The trees all along California Street are winter trees. Judging from the shadows under the cars in the foreground I’d say the photo was taken in the morning. There was probably a fog or haze at the time.
